They can be made from carbon, stainless, or any of the "red" metals. The most common usage of retaining rings is to hold the coaxial wire to the connector used in connecting the cable wire to the television set or VCR. The retaining ring fits over the coaxial wire and snaps the connector into place so that it cannot fall off the coax.
